Student Support Branch (SSB), Honolulu, HI - The Student Support Branch provides leadership and support to schools in assuring that a Comprehensive Student Support System (CSSS) is in place at every school. CSSS is a learner needs-driven delivery mode. It assures timely and direct delivery of preventative and developmental services as well as intervention and corrective services to target students and families. This branch is responsible for addressing the primary, secondary, and tertiary needs of all students--building a support network which includes all other appropriate agencies, departments, and service providers. International Reading Association - The International Reading Association is a professional membership organization dedicated to promoting high levels of literacy for all by improving the quality of reading instruction, disseminating research and information about reading, and encouraging the lifetime reading habit. Members include classroom teachers, reading specialists, consultants, administrators, supervisors, university faculty, researchers, psychologists, librarians, media specialists, and parents. National Council for Teachers of English - The National Council of Teachers of English is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. National Reading Conference - NRC is a professional organization for individuals who share an interest in research and the dissemination of information about literacy and literacy instruction. NRC sponsors a conference each year during the first week in December. Spell/Read P.A.T. (Spell/Read Phonological Auditory Training) - A new program from Canada . Joe & colleagues just did a study using it very successfully with LD students in spec ed settings. See url: www.spellread.com

Great Leaps (Cecil Mercer et al. - U of Florida) - Great Leaps is divided into three major areas: (1) Phonics: developing and mastering essential sight-sound relationships and/or sound awareness skills; (2) Sight Phrases: mastering sight words while developing and improving focusing skills; and (3) Reading Fluency: using age-appropriate stories specifically designed to build reading fluency, reading motivation, and proper intonation. ** Great Leaps is designed to be used as a tutorial - 15-20 min per day - can be done by a parapro/assistant. Read Write & Type - Tech based support for ELL and English speakers - phonemic awareness, decoding, spelling, and more...* Torgesen found RWT as effective as LIPs in one study!!
